Our Mission Statement
To strive for the intellectual empowerment of Muslim community in the field of Liberal sciences through educational initiatives and motivational programs for promoting a culture of continuous learning, critical thinking, and personal development.
Description of Our Effort
The key to all forms of empowerment (i.e. political, financial, cultural) has roots in intellectual empowerment. Intellectual empowerment, in this context, refers to the process of enhancing the abilities of an individual or a community to think critically and develop a deep understanding of various disciplines that shapes the world. Aside from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), knowledge of Liberal sciences (such as History, Economics, Political sciences, Behavioral sciences, Sociology, Philosophy) play a key role in shaping world affairs. The term "Liberal" in Liberal sciences reflects the idea that these disciplines are concerned with developing the capacities of free citizens and fostering a broad and critical understanding of the world. Liberal sciences has two standard branches which depends on the approach to the discipline [details here]. These branches are Positive Liberal Sciences (What and how things are done?) and Normative Liberal Sciences (How things should be done in an ethical framework).
While Muslims in the past several centuries have written extensively on the Normative branch of Liberal sciences, the contribution to the Positive branch of Liberal sciences has not been apparent. It can very well be due to lack of recognition of such Muslim scholars from the academia and political authorities of both the Muslim and Western world. In either case, there is a need for improvement in this arena as majority of the systemic developments emerge from the Positive branch of Liberal sciences. Hence, it is extremely important to study and take a lead on this branch to constructively shape world affairs.
To understand how the 21st century world works, one needs a broad objective knowledge of:
- History: How we have arrived at this stage?
- Economics: How countries and communities prosper financially? How economic cycles develop and impact power dynamics?
- Political sciences: How a parties / individuals / ideologies gain power? How do they make policies?
- Philosophy: What are the underlying thoughts behind how the world operates?
- Behavioral sciences and Sociology: What factors affect collective psychology of a society? How to positively influence a society? What are the emerging trends in a society?
Without a strong understanding of these academic disciplines among its members, Muslim community cannot face the challenges of 21st century. The key to all forms of empowerment (including political, financial and ideological) has a strong foundation in intellectual empowerment [details here].
Muslim Intellectual Network for Empowerment (MINE) was started with the purpose of promoting the objective study of Liberal sciences in Muslim community. Its main goals are:
To motivate people to pursue Liberal sciences as a community and religious necessity and to make the pursuit of knowledge a grassroots effort.
To provide venues for professionals and the adult population to broaden their knowledge of how the world works by exposing them to basics of Economics, Political sciences, History, Philosophy, Sociology and Behavioral sciences. This will be done through easy to understand webinars, book clubs, blogs and presentations.
To organize accomplished academics to contribute to the development of community by sharing their thoughts and knowledge and producing ideas that will reshape the world.
This work is extremely crucial for Muslims to live with dignity.
Creating a population of learned individuals will make sure that the future generations of the Muslim community will be intellectually empowered to face the challenges of the modern world and lead the world in shaping its affairs.
